Precambrian paleosols and atmospheric CO2 levels

چکیده

Precambrian atmospheric pCO2 levels were previously estimated using a simple thermodynamic model based on the mineral assemblage in paleosols. In addition to theoretical flaws with that model, recalculation of pCO2 levels using more recent thermodynamic data gives significantly lower values. A new model based on the mass balance of weathering in paleosols gives consistent results from three separate ∼2.2 Ga old paleosols. The calculated pCO2 value of 23×3 ÷3 times present atmospheric levels is insufficient to overcome the “faint young Sun” paradox, suggesting that another greenhouse gas such as CH4 was present at elevated levels relative to the present atmosphere to account for the discrepancy. Applying this new approach to other Precambrian paleosols a Proterozoic pCO2 curve is generated, which indicates consistently high pCO2 from 2.5 to 1.8 Ga ago, and a substantial drop in atmospheric pCO2 at some time between 1.8 and 1.1 Ga ago. © 2006 Elsevier B.V. Using paleosols of the Picture Gorge Basalt to reconstruct the middle Miocene climatic optimum

The Picture Gorge Subgroup of the Columbia River Basalt preserves numerous, minimally altered, interfl ow paleosols that were formed during the middle Miocene climatic optimum. These paleosols are used to reconstruct a high-resolution paleoclimate record. Between 16.0–15.4 Ma ago, mean annual precipitation (MAP) was 500–900 mm/year and mean annual temperature (MAT) was 8–16°C, which is consiste...

Genome-wide transcriptomic analysis of the effects of sub-ambient atmospheric oxygen and elevated atmospheric carbon dioxide levels on gametophytes of the moss, Physcomitrella patens

It is widely accepted that atmospheric O2 has played a key role in the development of life on Earth, as evident from the coincidence between the rise of atmospheric O2 concentrations in the Precambrian and biological evolution. Additionally, it has also been suggested that low atmospheric O2 is one of the major drivers for at least two of the five mass-extinction events in the Phanerozoic. At t...

Goethite, calcite, and organic matter from Permian and Triassic soils: Carbon isotopes and CO2 concentrations

Pedogenic goethites in each of two Early Permian paleosols appear to record mixing of two isotopically distinct CO2 components—atmospheric CO2 and CO2 from in situ oxidation of organic matter. The C values measured for the Fe(CO3)OH component in solid solution in these Permian goethites are 13.5‰ for the Lower Leonardian ( 283 Ma BP) paleosol (MCGoeth) and 13.9‰ for the Upper Leonardian ( 270 M...

Carbon and Climate System Coupling on Timescales from the Precambrian to the Anthropocene*

Over a range of geological and historical timescales, warmer climate conditions are associated with higher atmospheric levels of CO2, an important climate-modulating greenhouse gas. Coupled carbonclimate interactions have the potential to introduce both stabilizing and destabilizing feedback loops into Earth’s system. Here we bring together evidence on the dominant climate, biogeochemical and g...

Cenozoic Paleoclimate on Land in North America

Paleotemperature and paleoprecipitation over the past 40 m.yr. can be inferred from the degree of chemical weathering and depth of carbonate nodules in paleosols of Oregon, Montana, and Nebraska. Paleosol records show that late Eocene (35 Ma), middle Miocene (16 Ma), late Miocene (7 Ma), and early Pliocene (4 Ma) warm climatic episodes were also times of a wet climate in Oregon, Montana, and Ne...
